Why Definitions are Important

Updated: Oct 3, 2024

Why harp on something as foundational as a Definition?

It almost feels like something you could or should skip over. Get to the good stuff!

That's really the point, isn't it? So often... too often... we take definitions for granted.

We throw words around assuming that "you know what I mean," or "certainly this word means the same to you as it does to me."

How many disagreements, fights and relational breakdowns could be avoided if we paused briefly to simply define a word? How many slip-ups, flubs or flat-out failures could be avoided if we took just a few seconds more to check-in and make sure "that word means what you think it means."

Foundational

While we didn't call it out as a core "Distinctive," we've found more and more that defining terms is one of our foundational principles in working together.

Our industry is full of so many terms that are thrown around and become buzz words. "Marketing," "Branding," "Creative," "Design," "Hosting."

Folks seem to take for granted that everyone is on the same page.

They rarely are.

Similarly, you have terms that are important to you, personally and within your own industry. Even if we think we're familiar with them, we want to make darn sure that we're locked in with you.

If you ever find that something's not clear - whether it's with us, or your work, your family, or anywhere in life - ask! Clarify definitions.

Measure twice. Cut once. It just makes everything better and smoother.
